Chapter 17

Wendell returned from North Carolina shortly before five P.M. He immediately went into Craig’s office.

“I interviewed one woman,” he began, “who said she’d dated Valerie Tucker but since Tucker’s been released hasn’t heard a thing from her. She was very eager to tell everything she knew. She even had these,” Wendell laid several sheets of drawings on Craig’s desk. “Tucker left those in her room when she was released.”

Craig examined the hand-drawn blueprints. “This is set up like a hospital,” he said. “The only difference is there’s only room for one patient.”

Wendell laughed. “Check out these doors,” he said, pointing to the layout. “There’s nothing behind them.”

Craig looked up. He was angry. “If they so much as harm a hair on Cameron, I’ll see that they spend the rest of their lives in prison…with no thought of parole. We’ve got to find this.”

“That must have cost a fortune. I thought Richard got all of Hernandez’s assets. Where are they getting money for something like this?”

“Either Hernandez had something somewhere we never found, or they have an accomplice on the outside.”

“Damn,” Craig said as he looked through the second page of the blueprints. “This looks too well-planned to be done by someone in prison.”

Wendell nodded. “There must be someone outside.”

Craig took a deep breath and stepped back. “What else did this woman have to say?”

Wendell sat down in the chair in front if Craig’s desk. “She thought that Hernandez and Tucker were planning to buy or rent a building to renovate. She knew Cam’s name and thought a lot of the planning had to do with Cam.” Wendell laughed, wryly. “She said that Tucker and Hernandez were spending too much time together. She was jealous.”

“And she told you all of this out of the goodness of her heart?”

Wendell grinned. “Well, no. I told her that if this all checked out, we’d report it to the parole board.”

“If it leads to getting Cameron back alive, we’ll do more than that. Have Stewart get his team to look for warehouses or factories, too, not just houses.”

It was very early in the morning when the phone rang. Norma answered it.

“Hi, Gram,” the young voice said.

“Well?” Norma asked, hopefully.

“We didn’t find anything tonight, but we haven’t stopped looking. We showed their pictures to all the bartenders, but we still haven’t gotten anything. We’ll be back out tomorrow night.”

“Well,” Norma sighed. “You know it’s a long shot.”

“We’ll find something,” Robin declared. “We won’t stop until we do.”

“All right,” Norma told her. “How can I get more money to you?”

“Oh, Gram,” Robin chuckled. “I’ve got enough for tomorrow. I may need more for the next night, but not as much. I’m going out alone.”

“Alone? Why?”

Robin let out a small breath of air. “Nikki’s going home to see her family.”

“You’re not going with her?”

Robin laughed. “It’s better I don’t. Her mother doesn’t like lesbians.”

Norma was amazed. “Doesn’t she know about Nikki?”

“Sure, she knows, but not everyone’s like you, Gram.” Robin stopped to take a breath.
